Hats of Meat - Scraps




These vintage photographs, showing what historians believe to be the earliest North American meat hats, were recently discovered in the attic of the Nathaniel Hawthorne birthplace in Salem, Massachusetts.

The practice of "scalping," contrary to popular belief, was originated by the Pilgrims, not the Native Americans. In "Scaredy-Scalp," a game similar to "MUMBLETY-PEG," Pilgrim boys would throw hunting knives at each other’s heads, to see who could take off the largest quantity of an opponent’s hair.
